GARDEN CULTURE. — The bulbs may be planted from October to December in any good well-drained garden soil. They should be set six inches apart, and three to four inches deep. Before the ground freezes cover the beds about six inches deep with leaves or other good litter to keep out the frost. The covering can be kept in place by pieces of boards or boughs and should gradually be removed upon approach of warm weather in Spring. The bulbs should be left until the foliage turns yellow, when they may be lifted, dried off and kept in a dry, cool place for replanting. CULTURE IN POTS. — Select solid, heavy bulbs and plant as early as possible, using a four or five inch pot for a single bulb. Fill the pots with a light, rich potting soil, and have the top of the bulb just above the surface, give a good watering and set away in a cool place, covering them with about live inches of sand or coal ashes. This prevents the bulbs from rising while the roots are growing and keeps them quite moist. In about eight weeks they may be taken to the room in which they are to flower. By bringing in a few pots at a time about two weeks apart a succession of bloom may be had. CULTURE IN GLASSES. — The 'single varieties are adapted for glass culture, and the best named sorts should be selected. Use soft water in filling the glasses, put in a little charcoal and allow the bottom of the bulb to just come in con- tact with the water. Keep in a dark, cool place until the roots are about six inches long, when they may be brought into light and warmth to bloom. Add water occasion- ally as it evaporates, and the nearer they can be kept in a temperature of 6o° P. the better will be the results. CHOICE MIXED HYACINTHS. IN SEPARATE COLORS. These are made up of varieties selected for beds and borders, or for forcing for cut (lowers, and are of such superior quality as to be entirely satisfactory to florists, who use large quantities of them. For house culture they are equally desirable and should be treated as recommended for Hyacinths. They are all perfectly hardy, excepting the Polyan- thus varieties, and these, with a good covering to exclude the frost will give larger and better flowers than when grown inside.
